New Toastmasrters Year. New President Andy Pape opened his first meeting to a warm audience. Leading by example he completed his CC#10 Speech which was an inspiring talk on his Toastmasters experience, "The Journey to No.10". Another new beginning was an Ice Breaker speech "Breaking the Ice" by Deborah Lewis. This speech finished with a lovely sentence that she did not have to crack the ice with an Icebreaker, that the warmth here helped her melt it.

A smaller (cosier) meeting in which most people spoke two or more times. A good range of speakers this evening, showing the clubs depth included Rose Sawkins CC#3 Get to the Point, Rona Harding CC#10 Inspire Your Audience and a Simon Cooper's Advance Dramatic Talk.
Immediate Past President Sue mannering took on the Toastmaster role as traditionally happens on the last meeting fo the Toastmasters year.

A massive attendnace of 36, well done everyone who brougt a friend to make the meeting event better, its great to get a bigger audience as the learnings and feedback to the speaker increases. A very special meeting with the club gaining two more Competent Communicators, well done to Jennifer mackay and David healy who was also voted best speaker, and both speeches were very inspiringing. David's speech hoped to sinspire the audience to inspire others. A lesson david learned was to somethign small can have a big effect, so sometimes getting more done means thinking small.  Ben Amthor's speech on the Big Five was a vocal variety speech that was very provoking and excellent choice of topic for the Toastmasters audience. Vivid pictures were of ones life being in a museum as in Tomas Derale book. The big five is the five experiences you want to be seen in your museum. The Toastmaster Doug Williams brought a great amount of energy from the start of the meeting, right unti the end. He promoted the word of the day (Quixotic - Impracticabily impossible, by grammarian Robin Cao) by getting everyone on the audience to use it. Aliki the special guest (GE) noted on how all visitors were welcomed by many committee members, well done to the team. A congratualations goes Chris Bell whom achieved his Competent Leadership this week for his outstanding efforts and helping make a better club.

27 speakers in total were packed into this 2 hour meeting and this included 5 guests, now 4 as congratulations goto Antonio who is our newest memeber. Club President Robert Carmichael opened the meeting ands straight away presented the club with two awards, a ribbon for Talk-Up Toastmasters, and a certificate for the Club's 5th Anniversary.
This was Jerry Arulandu's final meeting, so it was well organised that he be the Toastmaster. Deborah L was timekeeper for her first time, and told a bird peom that illustrated how time flies. Laura as Grammarian introduced the words of the day with examples such as aspire to be a better person who then inspires others, both of which were well used during the meeting. Amy's Table Topics were very direct 1 liners that had everyone on their toes, we were entertained by Chris Bell, David, Marlene, Chris Bloomfield, Jilly, Robin and Peter all gave impromptu speeches. Evaluating for the first time at Northern Lights was ACCA speakers President Monica Liljeroth.
Prepared speeches we learned about Louise Convery in London Calling, in which the audience travelled from Scotland and around the wolrd but it is London that feels like home. Susie Goldring speech as titled A million Different People (I should have wrote this report last night!). Rona's I can feel it in the water showed how our we are feeling really can affect the molecular building blocks of water inside ourselves. Jennifer Mackay gave a thought and heart provoking speech about the value of our names and sided againsts changing name at marrige. Speech evaluators included Ben, Doug, Sue and guest evaluator Andy. Everything gets evaluated and Jilly rounded off how the club has come on so much in the 5 years and how all this evenings participants did so well.
best bit best bit of the evening... the Icebreakers awards were presented to Louise and Susie, or which Susie also won Best Speaker. Chris Bell won Best Table Topic Speaker and guest evaluator Andy Jones from Holborn Speakers left with Best Evaluator.

Meeting Report 1st March 2010

What a fantastic meeting. Our guest General Evaluator, Adrian Carter, Holborn Speakers VPE was impressed by the multiple times he was greeted as he entered the London Irish Centre. We started with a short opening speech by myself, followed by a call to arms for the club competition (to be held on the 15th March) by the competition Chairman, Simon Cooper , followed by a reminder that dues must be paid in the month of March by the Treasurer, Peter Charles. 
Andy Pape ran the evening smoothly as Toastmaster, whose job it is to control the stage handover to the functionaries and speakers. We were kept to time by the experience Peter Charles, who put it that speakers should speak long enough to get their point across, but short enough to keep the speech interesting, so in Toastmasters that is somewhere between the green and red lights. Anna Parton introduced a two words of the day, compliment & complement, which are often misused.
The speaker Abigail Leland gave us an informative talk on the pro's and con's of freelancing so that we could decide for ourselves what we thought was best, and the advanced speaker Christopher Bell gave a humorous tale fo his interactions with different Londoners', as he took us back to his days as a video returner man. Evaluators were Doug and Simon respectively, the voted best evaluator of the evening was the table topic evaluator Jennifer Mackay. Clare provided a most excellent table topic session. She used pictures of objects which the impromptu speaker had to own up to owning and return it to the pit gallerly, lots of amusing & imaginative storytelling was told. The rest of the evening in numbers: 12 table topic speakers (best table topic speaker was Louise Convery); 28 people attended; 1 new member, congrats to Marlene, who was a regular visitor to Northern Lights.

Another enjoyable evening and the speakers were (as always) excellent.

There were a massive 10 table topics and 3 prepared speeches.
26 attendees, 8 guests. Everyone participated. Congratulations to our three newest members; Max, Laura and Chris.

Another fantastic meeting at the London Irish Centre. Nearly 30 people I think (did anyone count?), including 8 guests. I opened the meeeting, then had to find extra seats for the latecomers. Timely they missed listening to the timekeepers introduction. Ben brought life to this role by remarking on all of those who spoke, and quoted Auston Dobson "Time goes, you say? Ah no! Alas, time stays, we go". Sue came back from Austrailia to be the Toastmaster. Christopher Norris was Grammarian and introduced the word Iota - when you do not know something, or a very small thing, something I missed while getting chairs.
Simon themed the table topics on his current situation, moving home. Incredibly, for the second time running our guest Anna Parton won best table topic speaker, she has now signed up to be member, hooray. Other speakers included David, Vicky, Doug & Rose. The standard of table topic speakers was very professional said one guest.
Abigail finally gave her Icebreaker, Who Me, which summarised her thoughts on previous speeches at Northern Lights whilst she was hunting to find her own speech idea. Her Icebreaker was not all about herself, so we will need to ask her on our own to find out more. 
Peter's vocal variety speech extended our knowledge of William Carnegie. Inka evaluated his speech and commented the his use of painted/powerful/pauses. She also noted that before we did not have an iota about William Carnegie, and that Peter brought facts and figures to life. 
Louise's speech was about facing a crossroads, and her now chosen direction, involving the fulfilment  of a dream to mix work and international travel, although sadly this means that she was bowing out of Northern Lights. Louise's final speech involved a run through of some of the things learned while giving her past 7 speeches, which includes making speeches stonger by making them personal, or more self => more power. Jilly brought history to life in her descriptive speech titled the spitfire girls.
Finally, Division B Gov Hillary Brigg's was GE, and by the time she came to stage she remarked that if she stepped straight off the stage then the meeting would still end over time. She evaluated everyone who had not yet been evaluated and amazingly did it without notes. We eventually finished 15 minutes late after she rightly used her full slot, I put myself at fault for my timing error, starting one minute late which simply cascaded horribly, remind me to start one minute early next time. Sadly a lot of people went over the red light and some even ignored the bell. Half of us, however, still made time for drinks and socialising down at at the bar, guests included.

Since I forgot at the meeting, I would now like to announce that the club speech and evaluation contest will be held on the 15th of March, at our usual venue and same time.
