TOASTMASTERS CLUB MEETING - THE FUNCTIONARY ROLES (Meetings commence with a brief opening address by the Club President.) THE TOASTMASTER – is responsible for introducing all the other functionaries and making sure that the meeting runs smoothly and that accurate timing is adhered to. TIMEKEEPER – there is a lighting board at the back of the room visible to all presenters. Every contributor is timed and depending on the time allocated for the presentation the timekeeper displays first a green light, then amber, then red at which time the presenter must stop or risk having a bell rung (a last resort and it usually produces a lot of laughter) GRAMMARIAN – listens out for use of language, the pearls and the pitfalls. At the close of the meeting he/she will comment and highlight the good, the bad and the ugly (usually not much that is ugly). TOPICS MASTER/MISTRESS – Table topics are the 90 second, off-the-cuff speeches which introduce every Toastmasters Workshop. It is the role of the Topics Master to devise an interesting and stimulating series of topics which are then ‘sprung’ upon the audience. You do not know what you are going to have to talk about until you name is called and you step up to the podium. Some like it, some loathe it, but it’s tremendously good experience. SPEAKER – Every member, at his/her own speed is required to make ten speeches, commencing with the ‘Icebreaker’ towards the goal of Competent Communicator. (Full instructions will be found in the manual) EVALUATOR – this role requires acute listening and observation skills. The desired outcome is for the evaluator to be able to commend, recommend, and commend again. In other words using the ‘sandwich’ technique to say what was really impressive and what could possibly be improved. TABLE TOPICS EVALUATOR –demands even more accurate listening and observation since you may be required to comment on up to 8 speakers and you’ll only have 10 minutes in which to do it GENERAL EVALUATOR - .Can be a club member and can also be a visitor from another club. In this case she/he may comment on the general ambience of the venue, and the warmth of the welcome. He/she will then go on to evaluate everyone who has performed a role and has not, so far, been evaluated by anyone else. Thereby comments will be offered, plus commendations and recommendations for The President, The Toastmaster, The Table Topics Master, The Grammarian, The Timekeeper and The Evaluators. During the evening there will have been short breaks (1 minute) tabled for voting. We vote for best Table Topics Presenter, best Speaker and best Evaluator. Ribbons are awarded and the President then closes the meeting. We always finish on time. |
